Barbara Havens Gangel

April 4, 1950 ~ September 19, 2016 (age 66) 66 Years Old

Barbara Havens Gangel died Monday, 19 September 2016, after her third and most arduous battle with breast cancer. She was born on 4 April 1950 in Canon City to Bill and Bette Havens. Barbara was a graduate of St. Scholastica Academy in Canon City in 1968. She attended both Western State College and the University of Northern Colorado in Greely. There she earned degrees, Bachelor and Masters, in Speech Pathology, and Early Childhood Development. Barbara taught for many years in Canon City before moving into the second phase of her career as a Realtor; she worked closely with her brother Bill Havens until her illness interfered. Zachary Saban, the joy of Barbara's life, was born in 1978. His mother was abundantly proud of his accomplishments. An outstanding scholar and athlete, Zack attended the United States Air Force Academy and earned his commission as an officer. Zack was equally proud of his mother, attributing his path in life to her unconditional love and nurturing... "she was beautiful". In 2002, Barbara married long time Havens family friend, Dr. Michael Gangel. Together, Barbara and Mike enjoyed their years traveling throughout Europe, Alaska, and South America; their most cherished journey led them to Machu Picchu. Barbara and Michael delighted in nature. They were avid golfers, and also enjoyed fishing, and strolls along the Riverwalk. Their love of the mountains led them to purchase a home in Lake City, Colorado - a place they truly loved and shared with their families. As Barbara's cancer worsened, Michael lovingly became her devoted caregiver, ensuring her every need was realized. Along with her husband and son, Barbara is survived by her siblings, Bill Havens Jr., John (Cheryl) Havens, Suzanne (Bill) Wilson, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She will be missed as well by her beloved kitty "Olive". Barbara is also survived by Michael's children Todd and Megan. An extremely private person, Barbara respectfully requested that there be no funeral services. Her wish was to have her family celebrate her life by gathering in Lake City, Colorado "Barbara's Happiest Place on Earth". Please omit food and flowers. Contributions may be made in Barbara's name to the Fremont Adventure Recreation (FAR) organization, 455 Greenhorn Drive, Canon City, CO 81212.   Arrangements entrusted to Harwood Funeral Home.  Online condolences at Harwoodfunerals.com
