Kelly Dean McDermott

Kelly Dean McDermott, 47, was born on September 14, 1968 in Pueblo, CO., to Lonny and Cheryl McDermott.  He departed this world on May 14, 2016 in Canon City, CO.  Kelly lived in Penrose for 45 years then moved to Williamsburg, CO.  He attended Penrose and Florence schools.  After graduation he earned a degree in drafting/engineering.  He then decided he didn’t like nor want to be in a big city so he attended the Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy and pursued a career in law enforcement.  Kelly then decided to obtain a certification in the water treatment area before embarking on a career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons; working at the Florence facility at the time of his death.  Kelly loved sports, the outdoors, and hunting and was an avid 4-wheeler.  He enjoyed being around his family and friends and showing off his restored 1956 Chevy pick-up.  Kelly is survived by his son Brendan McDermott and Brendan’s mother, Lisa McDermott; mother, Cheryl Eddleman (Larry Schmidt), step-dad, Troy Templeton (Paula Walker); sister, Hope (Jim) Griffin; step-brother Archie (Diane) Templeton and step-sister, Tina Templeton, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews. He is also survived by his girlfriend Stephanie Mahan and her sons, Calvin and Jimmy.  He is preceded in death by his father, Lonny McDermott and grandparents, Fred and Roxie McDermott.  Funeral services will be at 10:0 A.M., Friday, May 20, 2016 at Canon Community Baptist Church, 1111 Monroe Ave., Canon City, CO., a reception will be held at the church immediately afterwards with burial to follow at Beaver Park Cemetery, Penrose, CO.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, P.O Box 8249, Missoula, MT 59807.  Arrangements entrusted to Harwood Funeral Home.
