James A. Potter, 68, passed away peacefully on October 22, 2017 with his family at his side. He was born February 11, 1949, in Pueblo, Colorado, to Fred and Faye (Coats) Potter, both of whom preceded him in death. His family moved to Lamar, Colorado, when he was 12 years old. Jim graduated from Lamar High School in 1967. He later moved to Denver where he became a heavy equipment operator. Jim purchased his home in Cañon City in 1988 and commuted to Denver for several years. During this time he met his wife, Kathy, in 1989. They were soon married on August 18, 1990, in Boulder, Colorado, and made Cañon City their home in 1992. Jim continued to work as a heavy equipment operator until he was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2004, forcing him to retire. Jim was an avid reader of the Trailsman and Louis L'Amour. He enjoyed watching the Broncos, hunting, fishing, camping and going to Country Jam. He cherished his time spent in Alaska salmon fishing with his brother-in-law, Jim Herndon who preceded him in death September 10, 2017. He was also a member of the Cañon City Elks Lodge #610. He is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Kathy (Akins) Potter; children, Chad (Megan) Potter, Kendra (Tom) Baldt, and Ryan (Elizabeth) Hafner; 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; brother, Fred "Fritz" Potter, sister-in-law Trish Potter; and his close friend and nephew, Lee Woodward. A celebration of life will be at the First Southern Baptist Church, 1500 N. 10th St. Cañon City, CO. on November 18, 2017, at 11:00. Reception following.
