Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Schim was a resident of Canon City since 1999, having moved there from
the Denver area. She was born to the late Virginia White Schim and Carl Jack Schim and was
raised in Detroit, Michigan. She attended St. Mary’s of Redford High School in Detroit where
she became a member of the National Honor Society. During her senior year, Beth traveled to
Ecuador as an exchange student. This was the first of two trips she made to that country. Later
she attended the University of Michigan. After moving to Denver, Colorado in 1979, she worked
as a superintendent of an apartment complex in Aurora. Beth struggled with mental illness for
many years but lived independently until a few years ago when she was placed in Valley View
Health Care Center. She was cared for with compassion, skill, and dignity until her death.
Beth is survived by her brothers Christopher (Michael Morgan), William, and Joseph (Phyllis),
her sister Martha (Christopher Maddocks), nephew Michael, and niece Allison. The family
acknowledges with gratitude the loving support provided by Emi Masiah, Mary Mars, Maxine
Featherstone, as well as Glenna Huskey and the First United Methodist Church of Canon City.
We suggest donations to the Loaves & Fishes Ministry of Fremont County (lfministries.org).
There will be no service. Beth’s cremains will be interred in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery,
Southfield, Michigan.
