Barbara West was born on December 20, 1925 in Canon City to Hazel Jo and Bertram Burton. She passed peacefully on August 18, 2021 at the Progressive Care Center in town.
Barbara’s family migrated to Canon City in the late 1800’s. They owned many businesses in town over the last 100+ years.. She was a Canon Girl through and through, who cherished her “beloved Sangre de Cristo Mountains.”
In 1942 she married her late husband Eugene West, who was a soldier stationed at Fort Carsen. After the War, they moved to California where they raised 6 children: Jean Miller, Dennis West, Nancy Cooke, Roberta Mendoza, Tony West, and David West (deceased). They had a large extended family of 6 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren. They celebrated 57 years of marriage before he passed in 1999.
During the California years, she worked as a Psychiatric Technician. Sewing was her hobby in her younger days. She even made all the clothes for her 6 kids. After 30 years of working, she retired. She and her husband Eugene moved home to Canon City.
Quilting became her favorite hobby. She taught quilting classes, was President of the Royal Gorge Quilt Council, was an active member in 2 additional quilting clubs, and made countless quilts for her loved ones and friends. At one time she put on a quilt trunk show displaying 48 of her own prized winning works. When she wasn’t sewing and quilting, she enjoyed canning the fruits and veggies from her husband large garden. Barbara also loved to read and adored cats!
Barbara was preceded in death by her Husband Eugene West, her son David West, and her sister Linda Lee. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family. May she rest in peace. Barbara’s Memorial Service will be held September 17, 2022 at 10:30AM.
