Curtis Hesla, Jr Obituary

Curtis J. Hesla JR, 81, of Canon City, CO. passed away on May 25, 2025 after a battle with cancer.

Born on March 22, 1944 in Minneapolis, MN. to Irene Darmody and Curtis Hesla. Curt grew up in Webster, SD. with older sister Lynne and younger brother Lon. Curt was active in sports when he wasn’t helping out at the family grocery store. Curt graduated from Webster High School in 1962 and went on to college at SDSU in Brookings.

Curt married the love of his life Matilda “Tillie” DuMarce in F eb. 1966 and shortly after, he left school to enlist in the Navy. During this time they experienced both coasts, stationed in San Diego, CA. and Buford, SC. after he completed Ed. at SDSU.

They moved to Montana in the mid 1970’s where they began lost weekends with friends on memorial and labor day weekends. The family moved to North Dakota in the early 1980’s and made their home in Dunn Center for the next 20 years. After Tillie’s loss, Curt moved to Colorado for the last 20 years.

Curt is survived by daughter Erin, son Jeff, three grandsons and three great granddaughters, many nieces and nephews and extended cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and spouse Tillie. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, Curt would have preferred you to head out into nature, stay the night and enjoy a cold beer with family and friends.
