David Dunn Obituary

David John Dunn won his battle against alzheimers on June 7, 2024.

Dave was born in 1937 in Greeley, Colorado. His parents were June Rose Dunn (nee Northway) and Fred Bradburn Dunn. He lived 9 years in Greeley, about four years in Denver, and the remainder of his childhood in Grand Junction Colorado. He attended Colorado School of Mines on a scholarship. As he was growing up, and at school of mines, and in the army, he was considered one of the best sharp-shooters in the nation. He was in the corps of engineers in the army for a tad over two years. He then got a job at Climax Molybdenum Mine, and moved his wife and two children to Leadville Colorado. After working at Climax for decades he retired from that position and became a metallurgical consultant, traveling the world.

There are many stories of Dave's sense of humor and his brilliant mind. Growing up with two brothers, there was a lot of mischief. Dave loved hunting and fishing, backpacking, and canoeing. He was a talented writer and speaker. He also was very artistic. He was a devoted family man. His friends enjoyed his company because he was funny and brilliant. He was active in: people's TV, repairing the translator on Mosquito Pass every year and fulfilling the office of treasurer; elected to the CMC schoolboard for 12 years; in the Leadville Gun Club; in Lion's Club for many years, and its president one of those years. He especially liked putting the flags up on holidays. He helped Terry Ploot put a candle lantern up on the 10th mountain division memorial at the entrance to Ski Cooper, several years in a row, on Christmas Eve.

Dave is preceded in death by his son, Andrew Bradburn Dunn. He is survived by his brother, Michael Dunn and his wife Linda, and their children and grandchildren; his brother Robert Dunn, his children, and grandchildren; his wife Glenda Dunn; and their daughter Robin Dunn. His true self will be missed by all.

Glenda says: I'm happy he's free; but it's okay that I'm sad, too. Because we lost a good chunk of our life together because of that disease. We had such a good time backpacking and canoeing. We both loved the outdoors, and that's why he was my best friend.

Robin says: Dad was a mountain man, and lived by the code of the west. Behind his quiet humble privacy beat a great heart; a heart with really tender emotion. He let his actions speak for him. His love, loyalty, generosity, and integrity were evident in every single thing he did. Anyone who knew Dad can agree: this was a truly great and delightful human being. I loved and respected --- and still love and respect --- him very much.

The informal memorial celebration will be on July 14th, 11:00 - 2:00, at the Leadville National Fish Hatchery in the pavilion. Friends and family are invited to attend.
