Frances Johnson Obituary

Frances was born to Howard Glenn and Verda Kay (Fingado) Gibson on January 3, 1946 in Alamosa, Colorado, USA. Frances was the oldest child of five which included Patricia (Patti), Brian, Sheli and Erik.  She began her heavenly reunion with God, Jesus Christ and numerous family members (including her daughter Carrie) on December 3, 2025.

During her elementary and junior high years, Frances lived in Ordway, Colorado and Fowler, Colorado where she helped her parents as they ran two separate grocery stores.  During her high school years, her family moved to Pueblo, CO.  Frances graduated from Centennial High School in 1964 and then took college classes at the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo.

In 1966, Frances met and dated H. Lee Johnson who had just returned from serving as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  They dated for several months. During that time, Frances’s youngest sister Sheli, who was six years old, said she was going to marry Lee when she got older. Frances quickly responded “No, I am going to marry him.”  Frances and Lee got engaged shortly thereafter and were married and sealed in the Manti, UT, USA Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in February of 1967.

Frances and Lee had five children:  Brent, Carrie, Jeff, Scott and Marc.  Carrie passed away 36 hours after birth, returning to heaven and  avoiding home life with four stubborn boys.  Frances was a wonderful mother who, through simple ways, encouraged her boys to be the best they could be and to step out of their comfort zones.  She quietly taught the gospel of Jesus Christ to her family as she faithfully served others in many settings.  She also had the opportunity to be a Grandmother to 23 amazing grandchildren and a Great-mother to 4 great grandchildren.

Frances worked in the cafeteria at Penrose Elementary/Junior High School for 20 years before retiring.  She was well known by students of that school for her kind and welcoming smile.  On several occasions, former students commented how her smile made their day.  She left Penrose School a better place when she retired.  Her cooking talent was not only noticed in the school but in her home as she fed four hungry boys and one hungry husband.

Her faith in her Savior Jesus Christ and her service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was of utmost importance to her.  She served in many church callings that included working with the children, youth and adults. Frances was also heavily involved in doing family history and helping others do theirs. Francis also supported her husband in his church leadership service, for which he will be eternally grateful. It was very common for Frances to accompany Lee on Sundays to meet with church members all day and to return late in the evening. Her faith and example helped all her boys serve missions for The Church.  Frances and Lee were also able to serve as missionaries together from 2002-2003.

Frances leaves a wonderful legacy for her family. She is survived by her husband Lee, sons and daughter-in laws:  Brent and Penny, Jeff and Terri, Scott and Danette and Marc and Marie, as well as her grand and great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her daughter (Carrie), her mother and father (Verda and Howard) her brother (Brian) and her parents-in-law (Harold and Marjorie).

Oh how we will miss our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.  We look forward to a joyous reunion on the other side when that time comes.

The family gives special thanks to the employees at Atlas Post Acute and Sangre De Cristo Hospice for their care and concern for our wonderful Frances.  THANK YOU!
