Joseph Harlen Schryver was born November 18, 1940, to Mayme (Schryver) Chapman in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Joe grew up in Victor Colorado, one of 7 children. In 1958 he graduated from Cripple Creek – Victor High School and joined the US Navy. After serving in the military Joe attended Adams State College in Alamosa. He married his first wife in the 1960’s and from that union had two beautiful children, Susie and Stephen. In 1965 he began his career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Joe was working in San Antonio, Texas when he met the love of his life Mary in 1971. They were married on December 31, 1975. Together they moved around the country for the FBOP and raised two more children, Becky and Tommy.
Joe retired on his 50th birthday and moved his family to Canon City, Colorado. Retirement was good, needing something to do he became the bailiff for Judge Julie Marshall. When he finally retired for good, he built a strawbale home with his wife by his side. They spent many happy years in Parkdale. He kept busy building custom furniture, as a member of the Lion’s Club, and Four Mile Church where his brother Tom was the pastor.
Eventually being so far out became too much and they moved into town. In recent years, due to failing health Joe and Mary moved to Crestview, Florida. There they were lovingly cared for by Bob and Tami Groves. His nephew and niece.
Joe went home with the Lord in the early morning hours of December 31, 2025 in Crestview, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his mom, Mayme Chapman, stepdad Charles (Bumps) Chapman, sisters, Betty, Carol, Patsy, and Judy, his brother Terry, and his son Stephen.
