Lawrence “Larry” Leslie Salerno passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with cancer at age 82. His beloved wife was by his side. He is survived by his wife of over 57 years, Sharon Marie (Kostelc) Salerno.
Larry was born on December 15, 1940, in Aurora, IL to Julia (Cavelli) and John Salerno. He grew up in Aurora where he became an iron worker and met his wife. They were married in May 1966 and son, Jeffrey Scott, was born in 1971. In 1974, the family moved to Canon City.
Larry was a member of Iron Workers Local 393 (IL) and 24 (CO). He worked on many significant construction projects across the county, including Dresden nuclear power plant, IL; the Kennedy Space Center, FL; Denver International Airport; and the federal prison in Florence. Larry was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was known for his honesty, attention to detail, wonderful sense of humor, kindness and deep affection for his family.
Larry was predeceased by his parents and brother, Frank. In addition to his wife, he leaves his son Jeffrey (Alison) Salerno of Aurora, CO.
A vigil service with rosary will be held on Wednesday, April 12 at 5:00 PM and a funeral mass with Father Jesse Perez presiding will be held on Thursday, April 13 at 10:30 AM, both at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Canon City. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to Fremont Regional Hospice, 1439 Main Street, Canon City, CO 81212.
