Maria Floripa Baca

Maria Floripa Baca, 85, of Florence, Colorado, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2024, in Cañon City, Colorado, surrounded by family and friends. Born on March 14, 1939, in Morley, Colorado, Maria was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, whose warmth and love touched everyone around her.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Joe L. Baca, and her children: Joelina Espinoza (Bobby), Joseph Baca (Linda Ortiz), and Joetta Basso (Claudio). She was a cherished grandmother to Levi Espinoza (Amy), Cody Espinoza (Alyssa), Devin Espinoza (Heather), Ricque Espinoza, Gabriel, Luis, and Siena Basso, and a proud great-grandmother to Noah, Ellee, Tavien, Kyle, Brooklyn, and Tenzin Espinoza. Maria also leaves behind her brothers Ernest, George, Reynaldo “Joe,” Matthew, and Andy Solano.

Maria was preceded in death by her son, Luis Abel Baca; her parents, Maria Adelina Solano and Abel Solano; her brothers, Genio, Benito, and Tony; and her sister, Dolores.

A devoted Catholic, Maria’s faith was a guiding light in her life, bringing her strength and comfort. She worked for over 30 years as a dietitian at St. Joseph Manor, where her love for baking and cooking brightened the days of residents and family alike. Maria especially loved gathering her family to make tortillas—a beloved tradition passed down through generations and shared with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Known for her kindness and generosity, she was crowned Pioneer Day Queen in September 2024, a fitting tribute to her spirit and deep community roots.

Maria’s strength, faith, and love created a legacy of cherished memories that will live on in those who knew and loved her.

Services will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at Saint Benedict’s Church in Florence, Colorado, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Viewing, Rosary at 11:30 a.m., followed by Funeral Mass at noon. The family warmly invites all who knew Maria to join in honoring her remarkable life.
