Merlin Eugene Steed Sr., 87, passed away at his home in Florence, CO, January 6, 2021 surrounded by his family. He was the eldest son to Walter Elsworth and Opal Mechling Steed. Merlin was born on March 31, 1933. He was a big brother to Glenn and Shirley. Merlin was a truck driver for most of his working life and served in the Army National Guard for many years. He married his first wife, Betty Marling, and they had five children. When she passed away Merlin married Rose Ann McCormick and they have two more children.
He is survived by his brother Glenn (Edna) Steed, daughters Angela Parker, Kay (Ron) Lamb, Bonnie (Jack) Parker of Ohio, Melody (Don) Lewis of Florence, CO; sons Merlin (Dee) Steed, Jr. of Mississippi; Wilber (Jennifer) Steed of Willard, Missouri; Walter (Stacey) Steed of Watson, Louisiana; 25 grandchildren and over 30 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Merlin was a member of the Orange Lodge 319 of the Freemasons in Anacoco, Louisiana, a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Betty; niece Sheryl Webb; granddaughter Bobbie Jo and his wife of 51 years, Rose Ann.
He and his dear wife Rose were owners of M&R Trucking and are together once again along with his sisters, parents and Betty.
A Celebration of his life will be held at 2:00PM, Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at Harwood Funeral Chapel, 516 N. 10th Street, Canon City, CO 81212. Masks are required during service. A memorial service will be held at a future date in Ohio, where he and Rose will be buried.
