Palma Romero, age 99, died June 20, 2024, at her home, North of Cotopaxi, where she had lived for 64 years.
She was born March 25, 1925, in Withee, Wisconsin to David and Marjorie (Strain) Coen, but, she grew up in Finley, ND. She was the oldest of six children, brothers Doug, Lyle, Curtis, Allen, and sister Joyce. She enjoyed Colorado so much that she enrolled on Western State College in Gunnison, CO. She enjoyed skiing the “Big Hills” of Monarch and Crested Butte. She would eventually earn a Bachelor of Arts Degree and meet her future husband.
She married Bob Romero in 1946 and they were married for 55 years. They arrived in Cotopaxi New Years Day in 1948 via the train so Bob could teach at the school. Palma worked for the Fremont County Department of Social Services for 30 years as a case worker and administrator.
Palma enjoyed skiing, gardening, jeep rides, current events, the Broncos, the Nuggets, her grandchildren and writing stories about growing up in the Depression years in Finley, ND.
Palma is survived by her children, Karen Reese (Paul), Rory Romero, her grandchildren, Jason and Gage Reese, Robert and Christina Romero, her great grandchildren, Brooklyn, Austin, and Noah. She is also survived by her sister, Joyce Benjamin of Verona, WI and brother Allen Coen of Fargo, ND and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her memorial service will be July 15 at the Steeple Event Center, 701 Macon Ave., in Canon City, CO at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Cotopaxi Early Learning Center.
